Overview of Nutrition
Overview of Nutrition
Nutrition is the science and process by which the body takes in, digests, absorbs, and uses food substances (nutrients) to maintain life, growth, and health. It focuses on how food affects the body and how proper dietary choices support overall well-being and prevent disease.
- What is Nutrition?
At its core, nutrition involves:
- Consuming food
- Breaking it down into nutrients
- Absorbing and utilizing those nutrients for body functions
Nutrients are chemical substances in foods that the body needs for:
- Energy production
- Growth and development
- Tissue repair
- Regulation of body processes
Good nutrition helps the body function efficiently, supports mental and physical health, and lowers the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
- Types of Nutrients
There are six major classes of nutrients, grouped into two main categories:
- Macronutrients (needed in large amounts)
Macronutrients provide energy (calories) and are essential for body structure.
- Carbohydrates
- Primary source of energy for the body
- Broken down into glucose for fuel
- Found in foods like grains, fruits, vegetables
- Can be simple (sugars) or complex (starches, fiber)
- Proteins
- Build and repair tissues
- Essential for muscles, enzymes, hormones
- Made up of amino acids (some must come from diet)
- Fats (Lipids)
- Provide energy storage
- Protect organs and support cell function
- Help absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K)
- Micronutrients (needed in smaller amounts)
- Vitamins
- Organic compounds needed for metabolism and immunity
- Examples: Vitamin A, C, D, E, K
- Minerals
- Inorganic elements that support bone health, nerve function, and fluid balance
- Examples: Calcium, iron, potassium
Micronutrients don’t provide energy but are essential for regulating body processes.
- Water (Essential Nutrient)
- Makes up a large portion of the human body
- Transports nutrients and oxygen
- Regulates body temperature
- Supports digestion and waste removal
- Functions of Nutrition
Proper nutrition serves several key functions:
Energy Supply
- Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins provide calories needed for daily activities
Growth and Development
- Supports growth during childhood and adolescence
- Essential for cell formation and body development
Repair and Maintenance
- Repairs damaged tissues and supports healing processes
Regulation of Body Processes
- Controls metabolism, hormone production, and immune function
Disease Prevention
- Reduces risk of chronic diseases like:
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- Cancer
- Balanced Diet and Nutrition Principles
A healthy diet must be balanced, meaning it includes the right proportions of all nutrients.
Key Principles of Good Nutrition:
- Adequacy: Provides all essential nutrients
- Balance: Proper ratio of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats
- Moderation: Avoid excess unhealthy foods (sugar, fat, salt)
- Variety: Include different foods from all food groups
Components of a Balanced Diet:
A balanced diet typically includes:
- Fruits and vegetables (vitamins, fiber)
- Whole grains (energy and fiber)
- Lean proteins (growth and repair)
- Healthy fats (energy and protection)
- Adequate water intake
- Importance of Nutrition
Good nutrition is vital across all stages of life:
Physical & Mental Health
- Supports brain function and mental well-being
- Maintains organ and tissue health
Immune System Support
- Helps fight infections and diseases
Weight Management
- Balances energy intake and energy expenditure
Longevity and Quality of Life
- Promotes healthy aging
- Reduces risk of chronic diseases
- Effects of Poor Nutrition
Undernutrition (deficiency)
- Weak immune system
- Growth problems
- Diseases like anemia or scurvy
Overnutrition (excess intake)
- Obesity
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
Both extremes negatively affect health and highlight the importance of dietary balance.
- Summary
Nutrition is essential for:
- Sustaining life
- Supporting growth and repair
- Maintaining health and preventing disease
It involves a balance of macronutrients, micronutrients, and water, combined in appropriate amounts through a healthy and varied diet.
